Kawasaki Glasses

Saturday, May 30th, 2009

I am going to treat myself to some new glasses soon. I have had my pair for a very long time and I think it is about time that I got something on trend. I have been looking around and have seen some Kawasaki glasses that I thought looked rather cool but I was not sure that they suited me really. It woudl be nice to have them but I do not want something that changes the way that I look too dramatically. I was thinking that the Silhouette glasses might be better because they are more like the style that I have already, but they are more modern looking.

I also want to get some designer sunglasses with my prescription in the lenses. I will need a new pair as my prescription has changed and it only seems right to change both especially as I sometimes change them when I am driving and do not have time for my eyes to adjust to the different strength of lens and so it is very dangerous. It will be nice to have a new cool pair as well, I love wearing sunglasses but obviously cannot see out of normal ones and so cannot keep changing the style of the ones that I wear which is a bit annoying,

Endoscopy Extremely Useful for Gastroenterologists

Thursday, April 23rd, 2009

Digestion and excretion are important cycles of human body. Without these two procedures human body stinks and becomes a hidden waste material. These two procedures should run one after the other, otherwise health of people deteriorates. No doctor can solve problems related to abdomen, only Gastroenterologist can clearly understand problems related to abdomen and intestine. Utah is well known, small populous state of USA. This western state has many hospitals and shopping malls. Gastroenterologists in Utah are proficient in solving digestive problems.

Utah Gastroenterologist can clearly understand digestive health of a patient. Utah gastroenterologist gives proper treatment to patient. Gastroenterologists develop mental strength in patient. Gastroenterology is a typical and most difficult task. Without special equipment, understanding the intestinal and abdomen status becomes difficult. It is in this situation doctors prefer Endoscopy. Even though Endoscopy is a traditional method, it is still existent at this place.

Endoscopy is actually defined as a diagnostic procedure in which doctors access the interiors of internal organs of body. Endoscope is used in Endoscopy: This instrument has a small tube, which acts on total internal reflection of light phenomenon. This tube is sent through mouth into abdomen to study internal organs. Utah Endoscopy is a simple procedure. Utah gastroenterologists can perform this procedure efficiently.

High heart rates linked to obesity, diabetes: study

Friday, December 12th, 2008

High resting heart rates may be linked to the development of obesity and diabetes, a Japanese study shows.

Heart rate is regulated by the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), a network of neurons in the body operating without conscious thought. It is also believed to affect the large intestine, blood vessels, pupil dilation, perspiration and blood pressure.

In an article published in the American Journal of Hypertension, researchers in Japan said people with resting heart rates of over 80 beats per minute had higher odds of developing insulin resistance, diabetes and cardiovascular problems.

The project was one of the first studies to assess the impact of higher heart rates on the body’s metabolism. It involved 614 participants who were followed over a period of 20 years.

The participants were divided into four groups: those with heart beat rates of under 60, 60-69, 70-79 and over 80.

Compared to those with heart rates of under 60, those who had rates of more than 80 were 1.34 times more likely to be obese, 1.2 times more likely to develop insulin resistance and 4.39 times more likely to end up diabetic.

“These findings provide a mechanism that might explain how obesity and the SNS are linked. This may, in turn, increase understanding of their causal role in the development of heart attack and stroke, the leading causes of death worldwide,” the researchers said in a statement.

The researchers believe that excessive nerve activities may lead to obesity because they lower the amount of fat burn in the body.

Wikipedia often omits important drug information

Tuesday, November 25th, 2008

Consumers who rely on the user-edited Web resource Wikipedia for information on medications are putting themselves at risk of potentially harmful drug interactions and adverse effects, new research shows.

Dr. Kevin A. Clauson of Nova Southeastern University in Palm Beach Gardens, Florida and his colleagues found few factual errors in their evaluation of Wikipedia entries on 80 drugs. But these entries were often missing important information, for example the fact that the anti-inflammatory drug Arthrotec (diclofenac and misoprostol) can cause pregnant women to miscarry, or that St. John’s wort can interfere with the action of the HIV drug Prezista (darunavir).

“If people went and used this as a sole or authoritative source without contacting a health professional…those are the types of negative impacts that can occur,” Clauson told Reuters Health.

Wikipedia is an online, free encyclopedia covering millions of topics in more than 250 languages. Users add and edit content themselves. Clauson and his colleagues decided to investigate the accuracy and completeness of drug information on Wikipedia given that one third of people doing health-related Internet searches are looking for information on over-the-counter or prescription drugs, and that a Wikipedia entry is often the first to pop up with a Google search.

The researchers compared Wikipedia to Medscape Drug Reference (MDR), a peer-reviewed, free site, by looking for answers to 80 different questions covering eight categories of drug information, for example adverse drug events, dosages, and mechanism of action.

While MDR provided answers to 82.5 percent of the questions, Wikipedia could only answer 40 percent. Answers were less likely to be complete for Wikipedia, as well. Of the answers the researchers found on Wikipedia, none were factually inaccurate, while there were four inaccurate answers in MDR. But the researchers spotted 48 errors of omission in the Wikipedia entries, compared to 14 for MDR.

“I think that these errors of omission can be just as dangerous” as inaccuracies, Clauson told Reuters Health. He pointed out that drug company representatives have been caught deleting information from Wikipedia entries that make their drugs look unsafe.

The researchers did find that after 90 days, the Wikipedia entries showed a “marked improvement” in scope.

Wikipedia can be a good jumping-off point for Internet research, Clauson said, but shouldn’t be seen as the last word on any topic-and should certainly not be used as a resource by medical professionals. “You still probably want to go to medlineplus.gov or medscape.com for good quality information that you can feel confident in,” he said.

Health Tip: Keep Bathroom Chemicals Locked Up

Monday, November 24th, 2008

The bathroom may be full of potential dangers and temptations for young children.

Here are suggestions to prevent little hands from getting into bathroom chemicals or medications, courtesy of the National Safety Council:

  • Always keep drugs stored in a medicine cabinet that is secured with a lock or child-proof latch.
  • All medications should have a child-proof cap, and make sure it is secure and tight.
  • Mouthwash may contain alcohol, which even in small amounts can be dangerous for children. Keep mouthwash away from a child’s reach.
  • When throwing away expired or unused medications, make sure the containers are secure and cannot be opened by children.
  • Store toilet cleaners — which often contain toxic chemicals — in a locked area that children cannot reach.

Enrollment for Medicare Drug Plans Begins Again

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

With the enrollment period for Medicare’s Part D prescription drug coverage program for 2009 kicking off Nov. 15, experts are advising seniors to choose a plan carefully because premiums and covered medications can vary from plan to plan.

“As we enter the fourth year of the Medicare Part D prescription drug program, we continue to see high satisfaction rates among beneficiaries and high participation among plans,” Kerry Weems, acting administrator of the U.S. Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services, said in a statement.

“However, plans do change their offerings from year to year. Some beneficiaries may see significant premium increases or changes, such as reduced coverage in the gap, if they stay in the same prescription drug plan in 2009. We encourage individual beneficiaries to review how their plans are changing and what other options are available to them to determine which plan best meets their needs,” Weems said.

Paul Precht, director for policy and communications at the Medicare Rights Center, echoed that advice. “Probably the higher premiums will get some folks to look at their coverage options,” he said.

“It’s going to be tough for people. The premium increases are substantial,” Precht added. “People are also seeing increases in the co-payments — it comes at a tough time.”

Medicare prescription drug coverage, sometimes called Part D, is insurance for seniors and some disabled people that covers both brand-name and generic prescription drugs at participating pharmacies. Open enrollment for Part D runs until Dec. 31.

People who are satisfied with their current plan don’t have to do anything to stay enrolled. But those in so-called standalone plans that only cover medications will see premiums increase by an average of $7.40 a month, from $29.89 in 2008 to $37.29 in 2009, according to Medicare officials.

Consumers should be smart when choosing a plan because premiums can vary widely, from $10.30 a month to as much as $136.80 a month. Most people should be able to find a plan in the lower premium range, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

Most Part D participants who don’t qualify for a low-income subsidy and who don’t switch plans will see an increase in their monthly premium, according to the foundation. Twenty-seven percent will see premium increases of at least $120 per year.

Premiums aren’t the only consideration when choosing a plan. Another important issue is making sure the plan you choose covers the drugs you take. Covered drugs and restrictions on drugs vary from plan to plan, so it’s important to review each plan before making a choice, Precht said.

One of the most serious issues in choosing a plan is the coverage gap, or so-called “doughnut hole.” While in this gap in coverage, most Part D participants must pay 100 percent of their total drug costs. For most plans this will total $3,454 in 2009, according to the Kaiser Family Foundation.

In 2009, nearly all Part D plans have a coverage gap, but one in four plans offers limited coverage in the gap — generally coverage for some or all generic drugs, though some plans also cover some or a few brand-name drugs, according to the foundation.

Considering the price of drugs in a plan is also important, Precht said. “There are a number of plans that charge quite a bit more for generics than other plans,” he said. “Particularly for people who take multiple drugs, that can make a difference between getting in the doughnut hole or not getting in the doughnut hole.”

Precht said some people use a combination of strategies to reduce their drug costs. “They rely on the cheap generics, if you can get it from some of the ‘big box’ stores, using Part D for brand name drugs, plus buying drugs from Canada as an option for brand-name medications,” he said.

People in Part D who meet the requirements for the low-income subsidy usually aren’t responsible for costs in the coverage gap. The gap was intentionally included in the plan when it was launched four years ago so costs would not exceed the limits set by Congress.

Another option for some people may be a so-called Medicare Advantage Plan. These plans cover both your medical care and prescription drugs. But before enrolling in one of these plans you may want to be sure your doctor and hospital are part of the plan you choose.

German doc miraculously cures AIDS patient

Friday, November 14th, 2008

A doctor in Germany seems to have pulled off the impossible by curing a 42-year-old AIDS patient with the help of bone marrow transplant, normally used in leukemia.

The feat has spurred hopes that the therapy could combat the deleterious condition that claims two million lives worldwide every year.

The patient who is an American and resides in Berlin, did not wish to be identified. He underwent a transplant of genetically selected bone marrow, nearly two years ago, after a decade of infection, said his doctor Gero Huetter, a hematologist.

Huetter had chosen a donor with a rare genetic mutation that practically protects people from HIV.

Since then the patient, who had been undergoing treatment at Berlin’s Charite Hospital for both AIDS and leukaemia, has been declared free of symptoms.

Significantly bone marrow transplantation is risky. It is administered to cancer patients only as the last resort after the failure of every other treatment and it kills a third of such patients.

However, an AP report quoted Andrew Badley, director of HIV and immunology research lab, Mayo Clinic, as having said that too much should not be made out of a single case. More such samples would be required to say that the virus is gone.

Anthony Fauci, director, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, US warned that the therapy was way too expensive and dangerous to use as primary cure.

David Baltimore, who won the Nobel Prize for work on tumour viruses, described the example as “a very good sign” and a virtual “proof of principle” for gene-therapy approaches, said an online report.

He has started a company to use gene therapy to target HIV.

A 15-minute brisk walk can curb chocolate cravings

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

Can’t get enough of chocolates even while you’re on a strict diet? Well, don’t lose heart, for your weight loss plan can still be a success – all you need to do is fifteen minutes of brisk walking everyday to reduce the choco cravings. That’s what a new study by researchers at the University of Exeter has suggested.

While, it was earlier known that exercise has important benefits for people in managing dependencies on nicotine and other drugs.

This is the first study to show that the same may hold true for food cravings as well.

In the study, the researchers asked 25 regular chocolate eaters to either complete a 15-minute brisk walk or rest, in a random order after three days of abstinence.Later, they were engaged in tasks that would normally induce chocolate cravings, including a mental challenge and opening a chocolate bar.

The researchers found that after exercise participants had lower cravings than after rest. Cravings were not only reduced during the walk, but for at least ten minutes afterwards. The exercise also limited increases in cravings in response to the two tasks.

“Our ongoing work consistently shows that brief bouts of physical activity reduce cigarette cravings, but this is the first study to link exercise to reduced chocolate cravings. Neuroscientists have suggested common processes in the reward centres of the brain between drug and food addictions, and it may be that exercise effects brain chemicals that help to regulate mood and cravings. This could be good news for people who struggle to manage their cravings for sugary snacks and want to lose weight,” said Professor Adrian Taylor.

Earlier research revealed that 97 per cent of women and 68 per cent of men experience food cravings. Craved foods tend to be calorie-dense, fatty or sugary foods, with chocolate being the most commonly reported.

Chocolate has a number of biologically active constituents that temporarily enhance the mood with and thus making people habitual, particularly when they are under stress and when it is readily available, and perhaps when they are sedentary.

Professor Taylor concluded: “While enjoying the occasional chocolate bar is fine, in time, regular eating may lead to stronger cravings during stress and when it is readily available. Recognising what causes us to eat high energy snacks, even if we have plans to not do so, can be helpful.”

“Short bouts of physical activity can help to regulate how energised and pleasant we feel, and with a sedentary…
