Practical Door Options

Tuesday, September 30th, 2008

Not everyone will need a truly unique door for their home. Some just need a nice practical door that will keep their household stay and warm during the harshest settings. This isn’t a hard thing to accomplish nowadays with the latest advancements in home design. If one is willing to look around, they will be able to find all of the doors that they need at a price that fits even the most modest budget.

Exterior doors to fit this purpose are easy to find. All you really need is a solid wood door that shows some basic resistance to the elements. In fact, the cheaper doors usually offer more protection since they tend to be a thicker and tougher door than their decorative alternatives. I will say that one should never think about being too cheap about the exterior door. The cost in heat loss and general damage will cost a lot more than that decent door.

Interior doors definitely offer a lot of practical options. Security and natural elements aren’t really a concern. You just need to have a solid piece of wood separating the rooms for privacy and air control. This means that you don’t have to worry much about the design, except to make sure that it at least goes with the basic look of the other wood in your house. Other than that, just look for options at your local home store. Don’t forget about local auctions though. Any big home being remodeled will usually toss out a bunch of doors that can go for low prices. Keep an eye out for such an option when you’re planning any changes to your doors.

Basic Gardening

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Many people dream about having the perfect house with a pretty little garden to accentuate the beauty of their lot. This can prove to be much more difficult than one would think though. You shouldn’t let yourself become too confused with the project. There are many different ways for you to build a beautiful garden or add little extras to round out your lawn.

The gardens may be the easiest to understand. I’ll start with an option for many people in more rural areas who have to protect their flowers from the local animals. This can be done in a beautiful and functional way by building raised gardens. The concepts are pretty simple. You build or purchase a raised display box that will contain the plants and their soil. They will be elevated for better viewing while also protecting them from the dangers of the ground.

Another inventive option would be water gardens. These are effectively a twist on the standard pond idea. The focus shifts more toward the flower though, as opposed to fish or frogs in a normal pond. A good water garden will let you exhibit some water lilies alongside some pretty riverside fauna. It is a bit expensive, but it can really make improve the overall look of your home and give it that unique look you’ve been searching for.

Finally, you may want to consider something as simple as a few children’s toys. There are several sandbox kits that can give you an affordable way to give a little life to your yard without any major landscaping.

Will adding too much water to a concrete mix make it weaker?

I’m not going to mix it to the point where it becomes ridiculously watery, but I’m going to add a bit more water than usual. Will this weaken the concrete when it becomes dry?

Water adds volume to concrete and yes it does weaken it. It also allows the concrete mix to become more fluid, and when that happens the aggregate (rock) that is in concrete starts to easily sink lower and lower in the slab or wall. Then the lighter weight sand, cement is at the top. You don’t want this you want the rock to be everywhere in the mix.
On a lot of commercial jobs the inspectors will not allow any water to be added to the delivery truck, if so it must be noted on the truck batch log, and can only be authorized by the inspector - why? because it weakens the mix.
There are many additives that can be ordered with concrete. Plastisizers which help it flow better in forms, hardeners, calcium cloride, helps it set quicker, fiberglass strands which add strength. It’s not just cement, sand & rocks anymore.
Be careful if you cover it, I would only cover it if rain poses a problem, let it air dry. If you cover it on a hot day, the temperature under the plastic can get very hot as concrete itself puts off heat during the chemical process of curing.
I take it you are doing a small job- still I would not add very much extra water.

My living room is very small and has only one wall. The front wall is all window. Then there is the wall w/the fireplace, which is flanked by awning windows, and the third wall opens entirely into the dining room. I need another surface for art or perhaps a flat-screen tv. It seems w/only one wall to work with, demolishing the fireplace would add value to the room vs. diminishing. I live in the SF Bay area, extremely winters don’t typically require it’s use. In four years here, I’ve fired it up twice.
Thoughts?

Is this an old period house? Victorian? If yes to either of these I would advise against removing it for re-sale value.

If this is a newer type house, you could take it out, but I would only if you are planning to stay there a minimum of 10 years.Fireplaces are not at all efficient, and wood is expensive, but some people love them.Personally, I think they are money wasters, and are only good for effect, and holidays, not a #1 heat source.

———

A lot of people like the look of a fireplace, not the fact that it heats up a room. I’ve known of people that set their thermostat really low, just so they could use the fireplace.

Is there a danger in breathing the fumes of a blown screw in type flourescent lightbulb?

Tuesday, July 8th, 2008

<!– /* Style Definitions */ p.MsoNormal, li.MsoNormal, div.MsoNormal {mso-style-parent:”"; margin:0in; margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:12.0pt; font-family:”Times New Roman”; mso-fareast-font-family:”Times New Roman”;} @page Section1 {size:8.5in 11.0in; margin:1.0in 1.25in 1.0in 1.25in; mso-header-margin:.5in; mso-footer-margin:.5in; mso-paper-source:0;} div.Section1 {page:Section1;} –>

I have heard talk of really getting ill from breathing the fumes from these new type of flourescent lightbulbs that everyone is changing over to in order to save on their electric bill. I am talking about the ones that screw into ceiling fans, lamps, or any regular light socket. Do these bulbs release radon gases that could pose a hazzard to humans when they are blown?

The hazards you are talking about would be from the mercury in the florescent lights. I would avoid breathing it in, but don’t be too concerned, it would take a lot of broken bulbs to cause problems. The gas is referred to as mercury vapor.

———

There are very strict laws here for getting rid of fluorescent tubes. We have to wear aprons gloves and face shields. I would try and avoid getting near a broken tube until the dust settles. then I would try to vacuum it up with a dust mask and goggles.
Safety first. You can fix the light not yourself.

how do you clean walls in the kitchen that have grease on them?what cleaning products do you recommend?

vinegar and water.

———

I only clean with baking soda and vinegar. Vinegar is an excellent cleaner on kitchen walls and grease. You can mix plain white distilled vinegar in a spray bottle, diluted with water. You can do any percentage, I usually do 50/50 for a strong cleaner. This cleans well, and doesn’t subject you to toxic chemicals.
