National Museum can’t expand, faces space crunch

Friday, October 17th, 2008

Strange as it may sound, the National Museum - the country’s largest museum - is able to display only a tenth of its 200,000 artefacts as a large part of its premises is being occupied by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).

The museum’s expansion plans are being held up for the same reason. The remaining artefacts are lying in the museum storehouse.

Culture Minister Ambika Soni has said that the ASI would soon be vacating the premises to give way for a massive expansion plan for the landmark museum that was originally conceived by India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

“We need more space to display the artefacts. The ASI will soon vacate the premises and then we will go for a massive expansion of the museum,” Soni told IANS.

She said the ASI would be shifting their offices, which are at the moment housed at the museum premises, to Tilak Marg in New Delhi.

The minister said due to space constraints the museum is unable to display important collections like the Indus valley civilisation sculptures and the Central Asian monuments.

Soni, who is also tourism minister, said the museum expansion is not being planned to coincide with the Commonwealth Games in 2010, as it would take at least five years for their plans to take final shape.

“We want the museum to be comparable to any other museum internationally,” she added.

ASI headquarters now function from sheds built on the same plot as the National Museum building.

ASI Director-General Anshu Vaish said they could not vacate the premises earlier as they had to get permission from the urban development ministry for constructing their offices in the Tilak Marg area as it falls under Lutyens’ zone of New Delhi where every construction needs special permission.

“We have now got one permission from the ministry and are waiting for another one after that we would start construction,” Vaish told IANS.

“We know the national museum has been waiting for long for us to move. We will move after the building is completed. It will take at least two years,” she added.

According to the R.R.S. Chauhan, director of exhibition and public relations at the National Museum, they have drawn up plans for the modernisation and expansion of the museum, which was opened in 1960 and is the largest in the country, holding artefacts from over 5,000 years of Indian history.

One plan includes constructing a special section for children and foreigners, which will give a glimpse of how the villagers live in India.

The plan is also to provide as much space for exhibitions, cafeteria, parking and administrative blocks as possible, Chauhan said.

“We have a collection of 200,000 objects, but we are able to display only 10 percent of them. We want to have construction under the ground. This will allow us to have more space and would ensure that there would not be any structural changes that would mar the original design,” he added.

“We have many important collections and are eager to show them. This would be possible when we are able to modernise the museum,” he said.

Chauhan said the expansion would also mean they would get more storage area for the artefacts.

On an average, 700 people visit the museum daily. The charges for Indians is Rs.10 and for foreigners Rs.300, which include an audio guide that explains the displays in five languages - German, French, Spanish, Hindi and English.

My doctor wants me to keep track of my blood pressure every single day for the next 2 weeks. Only problem is, I’m going on a Royal Carribean Cruise. Does anyone know if there is a medical office or anything like that on a cruise where I could check my blood pressure?

There is almost always a medical office on a passenger ship, so they would be able to do that for you. However, be prepared to pay for that service! Why not go to your local pharmacy and purchase the blood pressure tester and take it with you? The pharmacist will be able to recommend the best one for you, and probably even show you how to use it. They’re not expensive, and you would then have it on hand for home use and for all travel.

The ship should have a doctor, and probably a nurse or two as well. I’m sure he/she will be happy to take your blood pressure.

If you can’t do that, I suggest an automatic wrist cuff; you can get one in most drugstores for $50 bucks or so.

i need to go to new york from florida do you know the cheapest airline?

It’s hard to give a good answer without knowing where you are (if you’re in Pensacola, flights from Miami aren’t much use) but assuming you’re in the Miami area, the rock bottom cheapest flights are on Spirit Air from Ft Lauderdale to NYC for $9. To hear about the super cheap fares you have to join their travel club on their web site which is $9 for the first two months. Everything is extra, food, water, baggage, you name it, but they sure are cheap.

Their regular fares are also pretty cheap, too. If you want to fly from a different airport or you would rather a non-painful seat, try JetBlue.

Do I have to collect my bags in DC prior to going through customs when I’m switching to a domestic flight?

I am flying from outside the USA into the DC, then have a domestic flight out of DC. I am wondering if I have to collect my baggage prior to clearing customs and then re-check in for my domestic flight? Or if my bags will be checked all the way through to my final destination?

US Customs requires all passengers to clear immigration and collect their bags to clear customs at their first point of entry into the US. Yes, you will have to collect your bags in DC and clear customs, but most international airports have a desk to then re-check your bags before connecting to your domestic flight.

Tuna Fishing

Friday, July 4th, 2008

Massachusetts offers some of the best waters for Tuna Fishing. Anglers from across the country flock to this pristine location where some of the finest Blue fin Tuna are found. When trolling for tuna, you will generally use many lines with lures at various distances in the boat’s wake as it trolls at speeds of around 10 knots. The reason that you use as many lines as possible is because it imitates the look of a school of bait fish.

It is the noise from the tuna fishing charter boat’s propeller that attracts the tuna, and when they come to the surface to investigate the noise, the will hopefully see the lures and jump on. When this occurs, multiple hookups can happen. At this point the hit rod will then be put into one of two fighting chairs. The boat is then slowed and the angler is able to reel in the fish. The only drawback to troll fishing is that the movement of the boat adds to the stress of fighting the fish and it can take a good bit of muscle to finally land a giant. Another method to employ when tuna fishing mass later in the season is to tempt the fish with bait. This becomes easier as the fish start to settle in a given area.
